If you see every possibility in the universe, you're going to make a hell of a lot of false positives. He's not supposed to be a superhero he's just a fellow with an unusually broad perspective and a heck of a lot of knowledge at his disposal. Let the Doctor lose! Let people die, and have it be his fault! He's fallible, and he should be. Hell, I'd love for him to be less all-knowing and all powerful. I don't know if leaving the Doctor defeated is a bad thing in and of itself. You're the only person I've yet seen to nail 'em! Sleep No More tries, but it wasn't.īravo on correctly calling out the two adequate, even enjoyable, Gatiss episodes. TL:DR if a Doctor Who episode is going to break our rules and expectations for it, it needs to be better than a normal episode to convince us it was worthwhile. If there's any of that cleverness and plotting here, we don't see it. This is the man who came to his archenemy Davros and then counter-sprung his own trap within Davros's trap. This is the man who, just last week, stood down a fanatical terrorist just by persuasion. Plus, on a subconscious level, it's frustrating and unusual to see the Doctor defeated. But when it leaves several blatant hooks for future storylines, and leaves its central villain undefeated and his plan apparently unstopped, then I for one am put in the new and uncomfortable position of analyzing the plot details and internal consistency of a Doctor Who story. When those episodes are one and done, then it's easier to enjoy them on their own terms.

I don't want to hate on Mark Gatiss, because I really like both Robot of Sherwood and Cold War, but his episodes have never been entirely free of major plot holes. It starts to look more like plain bad writing. There's a disconnect somewhere, and I don't think it's with the army of fans. Many people are doing this despite the villain outright telling us his real plan and what he's doing next, to camera. But it hasn't earned it.Įnding the show halfway through the actual resolution only encourages people to speculate about what comes next and what really happened. Ending on an apparent villain victory or a blatant 'To Be Continued' sign can be a bold stroke, and I certainly applaud the episode and the show for attempting it. My biggest problem with this episode is that it doesn't feel like a finished episode. Let's discount the Sandmen's visual appearance and backstory - this is Doctor Who and even if you dislike it, that sort of thing is hardly out of place. There are plenty of other things that can be discussed about this episode and I think it would be valuable to do so, so let's do it! What do you all think about this experiment? What worked? I don't think the explanation behind them is really adequate, but it's clear what they are meant to portray. Rasmussen (the writer) puts together a series of events to entice the viewer and to keep them watching in order to spread the signal (fear). The found footage conceit and Rasmussen's eventual reveal is a very meta attempt to deconstruct the act of writing a Doctor Who episode. Gatiss was going for when writing this story. In reality, it's pretty clear to see what Mr. Doctor Who is all about experimentation and sometimes taking a risk means falling flat, but finding the intention behind the mistakes can do a lot to explain how this episode came to be.Ī post in the other subreddit has claimed that there was 'no symbolism' in this episode, which I think couldn't be farther from the truth. That being said, I think that it's episodes like these that deserve to be talked about in more depth. Some have found fault in the explanation of the Sandmen, others have decried the found footage format, and others still have simply written the episode off as a failure.
